Paris, 1991. Overwhelmed by the direct confrontation with Rodin's work, I become a sculptor at the age of 37. It is the starting point to develop my own narrative, figurative, visual language about the mutual relationships between people and myself.

The spiritual self-confrontation within human relationships is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Shaping this in tangible matter and visual language is a daily practice full of artistic questions.

Until a major illness broke through my physically demanding sculptor practice. Painting on canvas has proven to be a rewarding way out. This new artistic path is in full development. The crossroads between sculpture and painting have been taken.

The unfurled nuances in painting are fascinatingly different from those in sculpture. I now make portraits of my immediate surroundings – friends, family and myself – in search of an 'essence', a 'deepening' or an 'illumination' of the being and being. Without any excuses, shameless from a highly personal perspective, the portraits are a reflective documentation of my childhood, of my close relationships, of my own person and body. However, the inexorably direct portraits are also statements of taking a position in the world: a position on what life is – hidden or not – and what it brings: beautiful and cruel; unaffected and hurt; youthful and worn withered; growing and battered, affected or healing; together or lonely alone...

Parijs, 1991. Overdonderd door de directe confrontatie met het werk van Rodin, word ik op mijn 37ste beeldhouwster. Het is het startpunt om een eigen verhalende, figuratieve, beeldentaal over de onderlinge relaties tussen mensen en mijzelf te ontwikkelen.

De geestelijke zelfconfrontatie binnen menselijke verhoudingen is een onuitputtelijke inspiratiebron. Dit in tastbare materie en beeldentaal vormgeven, is een dagelijks praktijk vol artistieke vraagstellingen.

Tot een ingrijpende ziekte mijn fysiek belastende beeldhouwerspraktijk doorbrak. Het schilderen op doek is een dankbare uitweg gebleken. Dit nieuwe artistiek pad, is in volle ontplooiing. De tweesprong tussen beeldhouwen en schilderen is genomen.

De ontbolsterde nuances in het schilderen zijn fascinerend anders dan bij het beeldhouwen. Ik maak nu portretten van mijn onmiddellijke omgeving – vrienden, familie en mezelf – op zoek naar een ‘essentie’, een ‘verdieping’ of een ‘belichting’ van het wezen en het zijn. Zonder enige excuses, schaamteloos vanuit een hoogstpersoonlijk perspectief, zijn de portretten een reflectieve documentatie van mijn jeugd, van mijn nauwe relaties, van mijn eigen persoon en lichaam. De onverbiddelijk directe portretten zijn echter ook statements van positienemen in de wereld: een stellingname over wat het leven is – al dan niet verborgen – en brengt: mooi en wreed; onaangetast en gekwetst; jeugdig en versleten verlept; groeiend en gehavend aangetast of helend; samen of eenzaam alleen...

Paris, 1991. Submergé par la confrontation directe avec l'œuvre de Rodin, je deviens sculpteur à l'âge de 37 ans. C'est le point de départ pour développer mon propre langage narratif, figuratif, visuel sur les relations mutuelles entre les gens et moi-même.

L'auto-confrontation spirituelle dans les relations humaines est une source d'inspiration inépuisable. Façonner cela dans la matière tangible et le langage visuel est une pratique quotidienne pleine de questions artistiques.

Jusqu'à ce qu'une grave maladie éclate dans ma pratique de sculpteur physiquement exigeante. La peinture sur toile s'est avérée être une porte de sortie gratifiante. Ce nouveau parcours artistique est en plein développement. Le carrefour entre la sculpture et la peinture a été pris.

Les nuances déployées dans la peinture sont étonnamment différentes de celles de la sculpture. Aujourd'hui, je réalise des portraits de mon environnement immédiat – amis, famille et moi-même – à la recherche d'une « essence », d'un « approfondissement » ou d'une « illumination » de l'être et de l'être. Sans aucune excuse, sans vergogne d'un point de vue très personnel, les portraits sont une documentation réfléchie de mon enfance, de mes relations proches, de ma propre personne et de mon propre corps. Cependant, les portraits inexorablement directs sont aussi des déclarations de prise de position dans le monde : une position sur ce qu'est la vie – cachée ou non – et ce qu'elle apporte : belle et cruelle ; non affecté et blessé ; jeune et usé, flétri ; en croissance et battu, affecté ou en train de guérir ; ensemble ou seul...
